4 Effective Ways To Reduce Screen Time

How much time do you spend on your phone everyday? Research suggests that an average person spends about 3 hours and 15 minutes on their smartphones everyday. Thats’s almost 4 days a month and 48 days a year! Add the time spent on your laptop and television, and I’m sure the number will leave you baffled!

Technology is great if used mindfully. You must very well know that excessive screen time is bad for you. Extended use of electronics can cause what is known as the Computer Vision Syndrome, and can be identified with symptoms like stiffness in the neck, headache, red eyes, watery eyes, blurred vision and double vision, among others. When the time spent on your device is limiting your everyday well being, social life and productivity, you know that it’s time to cut back.

Reducing your screen time can help you:

FOUR EFFECTIVE METHODS TO REDUCE SCREEN-TIME:

  1. Delete apps that don’t add any value:
Deleting apps that add no value can be your best bet at reducing screen time. Social media, for example, can be the Bermuda Triangle for your time. You never know when you’ll get sucked in, and when you do – it’s a challenge to get out. Five minutes turns to ten minutes, and before you know it you’ve already wasted two hours mindlessly scrolling though information that you neither need nor have any use for.
  2. Create a schedule that works for you:
Let’s be realistic. School and office work may require you to spend a lot of time in front of the screen. Making a schedule to limit screen time has worked pretty well for me. Carving out technology free zones [bedroom, dining room, etc.] and technology free periods [meal time, family time, study time, etc.] are effective ways to reduce screen time. You can also keep track of the leisure time spent on your phone with a handy alarm clock or a timer.
  3. Find a new hobby or activity:
There are better ways to occupy your time than disappearing into the labyrinth of the internet. Finding a new and purposeful hobby or activity to occupy time will not just reduce screen time, but will also help improve mental health and wellbeing. Who wouldn’t want that?
  4. Use technology:
Sounds counter-intuitive, but installing apps that block distractions, turning off notifications, and using ‘screen time settings’, can be especially useful in your quest to reduce screen time. In addition to this, I’ve found that changing the display to greyscale (iOS) or bedtime mode (Android) also helps.

These four methods have been extremely effective in helping me reduce my screen time significantly! But…nothing works like old-fashioned willpower.
