Book review: ‘How to be a Bawse’ by Lilly Singh

I do not know why, but I have always felt this pressure to read self help books. The problem is that I am not too fond of such books. (a) I do not like how preachy they are and (b) I just cannot get myself to finish the book, and can barely remember the little that I have read. This was until I came across Lilly Singh’s “How to be a Bawse : A guide to conquering life”.

For those who may not know, Lilly Singh (aka Superwoman) is a YouTuber, comedian, writer, talk show host etc. etc. etc. She released her first book “How to be a Bawse” in 2017.

A Bawse is someone who excels in both personal and professional settings. A Bawse exudes confidence, turns heads, gets hurt efficiently, communicates effectively, and hustles relentlessly.

The book is intended to be a guide to help one not just survive life but to conquer it! It’s written in classic Lilly style, and is sassy and straightforward. Her mantra is that there is no elevator or a shortcut to success, and tries to provide some practical advice to help the reader climb their way to success. The book is divided into four sections with a total of 50 chapters. Each chapter is 5-6 pages long, with a colourful layout and lots of pictures- making it easy to read. In addition to this, almost every chapter has a small thinking exercise (like the one attached below), making the book interactive and engaging.

I wasn’t the biggest fan of Lilly’s work on Youtube. I watched her videos ever so often, but I wouldn’t call myself a fan. To be honest, I don’t even know why I bought the book, but I’m glad I did. This is the first self help book I’ve been able to complete (yay!). But more importantly, I think the content is pretty solid. She doesn’t provide any new advice as such, but her delivery makes all the difference. Sometimes it may also seem like the content lacks some nuance, but then again, I don’t think her point is to address every single problem, but just to outline some advice which she found useful in her life. Its not an autobiography and it doesn’t cater to a single question like “how to make money”. It’s a general guide to increasing productivity, achieving goals and conquering the little things that can be obstacles to one’s success. It’s an engaging and insightful book, and is anything but boring.

The universe might respect the law of attraction, but it respects a good hustle even more.”

Did it help me? Yes. There are some practical tips in her book, and they’re quite easy to follow. I have been following some of them for a while now (music therapy, for example) and they have been quite effective.

Is it for everyone? Umm… maybe not. Although her lingo is relatable to a 20 something person like me, it may not be so for someone that’s a bit older. I think it’s best suited for people in the age bracket of 12- 25 (give or take a few years).

Should you read it? Yes! Its a good book, and if you’re like me and find it difficult to get through a self help book, then this book might be what you’re looking for.

PS: The book screams Lilly Singh. If you don’t like her, then you may not enjoy this book.
